What is a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. CSA’s are a partnership! The farmer and the member share risk and reward. Your subscription allows us to depend on a stream of income to purchase seeds and supplies for the next season. In return, we supply you with an abundance of fresh, healthy produce all year long!

We encourage you to read about Community Supported Agriculture and how it differs from grocery delivery and meal delivery services. CSA’s cut out the middle man - WE grow it and WE deliver it! The produce is seasonal and picked at the peak of freshness just a day or two before you receive it. If you enjoy the element of surprise and value the bounty of local farming, you will enjoy a CSA Box!

Is CSA right for me?

There are many choices for produce boxes and meal kits. What are the differences and how do I choose?

Imagine going home with your CSA box and wondering what’s inside? Some members say it’s like opening a Christmas present! Do any of the following describe you?

  • I want vegetables and fruits harvested at peak ripeness.

  • Cooking is an adventure.

  • I can find a way to use carrot tops!

  • I value farmers who respect the environment, their customers, and their employees

  • I don’t mind the occasional hitchhiking slug if it means not using harsh chemicals.

  • The time spent preparing a nutritious meal is enjoyable to me.

  • I’ll take the challenge of finding the 12th recipe for kale!

  • I’m a Locavore and know that not getting summer veggies in my winter CSA box is how nature intended.

If any of these sound like you, then you are a good fit to become a CSA member! Just the freshest veggies in town, straight from the earth into your kitchen!

What’s in this week’s box?

April 23 - April 29

Please note, the listed contents may change slightly from the list based on crop availability. Your box will always contain the same number of items.

This week the Large Box contains 9-11 items: Celery, navel oranges, microgreens, sugar snap peas, carrots, Romaine lettuce, Japanese turnips, broccoli, spinach, Fuji apples, rainbow Swiss chard (Small Box contains 6-8 items, including 2 fruits)

The produce.

Farm fresh vegetables and fruit delivered locally, our CSA boxes promote healthy eating habits and support the local family farm movement.

CSA’s are a true “Farm-to-Table” community food program. Can you answer these questions about your food:

  • Where did this food come from?

  • Do I know the farmer who grew it?

  • Can I see the farm where it was grown?

There are no long-haul trucks, warehouses, or artificial ripening processes. We pick it, wash it, pack it and you receive it all in 1 to 2 days, not weeks. We use all RESPONSIBLE FARMING METHODS using OMRI (Organic Materials Research Institute) products and planting methods.

We do not plant GMO seeds.

The majority of the freshly picked produce is grown by Tanaka Farms with some items from other local organic or pesticide-free growers to provide a good variety in each box.

We harvest daily so your CSA box has the freshest produce in town. Boxes are not customizable since selection is based on what is ready to harvest that week.

CSA fundraising FAQ

What is the CSA Fundraising Program?

Tanaka Farms enjoys connecting our local family farm with members of the community! In an effort to reach the larger community, we began partnering with schools and churches to promote the program to their members. The participating sites maintain a membership base and use their site for members to pick up their boxes. In return, Tanaka Farms offers a portion of each box delivered back to the non-profit.

When and how often are the boxes delivered?

New sites are set up to receive deliveries every other week. We will let you know which delivery days and times are available based on your location. We will work with you to determine the best delivery window.

How much can my organization earn?

For each box delivered, your organization will earn 10%. For example, 10 large boxes ($39 each) and 10 small boxes ($29 each) per week will generate $68 per week. Fundraising checks are mailed quarterly (March, June, September, December) and include monies earned over the quarter.

What are the geographic boundaries of the program?

Currently, we are accepting new sites from South Orange County to the south, the South Bay area (El Segundo, Torrance) to the north, Yorba Linda/Corona to the east, and all areas in between.

What are the requirements for becoming a participating site?

  • Location in the geographic delivery area.

  • Minimum of 20 members to begin the program.

  • A volunteer or staff member to run the program. Site volunteers promote the program, maintain membership, print out a checklist before each delivery, ensure boxes are distributed correctly, gather empty boxes for the driver to pick up, and assist members with questions.

  • Be a qualified non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Do I have to sign up and maintain accounts for each of my members?

No, members will sign up online to create their individual accounts through our website. They will select your location from the drop-down menu, select their box size, and enter their credit card information. Members will also make any changes to their accounts through the website. The site host only has to print out the checklist for each delivery and make sure boxes are distributed correctly.

How do I get members to join?

Promote the program frequently to your members. Send flyers home with each student, mention it in newsletters, hold tabling events, and advertise to the neighborhood (if the school allows).

I work for a company that is not a non-profit. Can we participate?

We work with many private companies to deliver our produce boxes to the workplace. It is a great addition to your corporate wellness program! Private companies are not eligible for fundraising. The same requirements will apply - 20 minimum members to start and a site coordinator to maintain the program.

How do I get started?

We would love to partner with you! Fill out the interest form or contact us at: csa@tanakafarms.com or (949) 653-2100 ext. 201. We will discuss your location and schedule a visit. Once we determine a good fit, we will set you up in our system and you can start promoting. Deliveries can begin as soon as the 20 member sign-ups are met.
