Volunteers needed for barnyard help at Hana Field!

See below this page for more information.

Our Barnyard Educational Exhibit is a labor of love headed up by the amazing Shelmarie!

Along with her team of dedicated volunteers, the Barnyard is home to a majority of rescued farm animals who will live out the rest of their lives here at Tanaka Farms.

Unlike a petting zoo, Shelmarie has designed an educational experience where the kids (and adults!) can visit with the animals in a safe environment.

The Barnyard Educational Exhibit is a project of The Legacy Barn, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Shelmarie

Shelmarie

Barnyard Manager · Since 2018

Shelmarie is the founder and manager of our barnyard educational exhibit, run through their nonprofit, The Legacy Barn. She is the heart behind the care of our animals and a steady, nurturing presence for the entire barn family. Her dedication ensures every animal is loved, every detail is thoughtfully handled, and the barnyard continues to grow with purpose. If you see her around, be sure to say hello. She is always happy to share a smile and a little animal wisdom too!

Candice

Candice

Assistant Manager · Since 2025

Candice is our Assistant Barnyard Manager and Shelmarie’s trusted sidekick. She loves working with the animals, especially the goats, and thrives being outdoors helping bring all our barnyard events to life. Always ready to lend a hand (or scoop up a baby goat), she keeps things running smoothly… though every now and then she and Shelmarie might team up for a little harmless barnyard mischief.

Abbie

Abbie

Barnyard Lead · Since 2020

Abbie began as a volunteer and has grown into the lead of our barnyard. As our equine specialist, she plays a key role in caring for the animals and guiding our team. Her favorite part of the job is building real connections with each animal, and she has a calm, intuitive way about her that feels a lot like a true barnyard whisperer.

Liz

Liz

Barnyard Lead · Since 2024

Liz is one of our dedicated barnyard leads and brings steady leadership with a playful spirit. She’s quick on her feet, deeply caring with the animals, and always ready to jump in wherever she’s needed. Pinto the pony is her undeniable favorite, and while she keeps the barnyard running smoothly, she still finds time for strawberries… which Pinto somehow always ends up helping her finish.

Frankie

Frankie

Barnyard Artist· Since 2020

Frankie is our barnyard artist and a talented local OC creative. He is a passionate artist, environmental advocate, and human rights activist who uses his work to spark thought and inspire positive change. You’ll usually find him creating behind the scenes, but his art adds color, meaning, and heart all across the farm. We’re proud to support local artists, and you can see more of his work on Instagram at @sloopy_

Storytime at the Barnyard

Join us at the Barnyard Educational Exhibit for Storytime! Our Barnyard volunteers and staff will be reading farm-themed stories right by all of our Barnyard friends. After story time, visit with the animals! Storytime lasts about 30 minutes. (Geared towards children 1 - 5 years old.)

Barnyard story time is every Tuesday and Friday at 10:30 AM
